Plugging in to the Power Source
For my birthday, my granddaughter Kaity gave me a little fountain. She was very excited as she pulled it out of the box and assembled it—a small tray for water, the fountain itself sitting on the tray, a power cord to plug it into the wall.
As I peered at it, I could not help but notice that it was plain and gray—nothing exceptional about it.
But then she plugged it in, and the water began to flow. In addition, a light came on from deep within it. Suddenly, it was beautiful! The bubbling water was so soothing that I placed it on my sun porch where I could turn it on and listen to it during my early morning Bible reading and meditation.
A few days later, I opened Jesus Always, a favorite devotional book. One of the passages for the day was from John 4:13-14, a conversation Jesus had with the Samaritan woman at the well:
“Jesus replied, ‘Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.’” John 4:13-14
A second scripture immediately came to mind. “Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’ (When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him.” (John 7:38-39 NLT)
My thoughts went back to my bubbling fountain. Without being plugged in to the power source, it was bland and colorless. Plugged in to the electric current, it came alive with moving water and bright light.
John 8:12 tells us, “Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, ‘I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.’” (John 8:12 NLT)
Wow! Living water will flow from his heart. Light that dispels the darkness of a sinful world emanates from him. What beautiful imagery of what happens to us as Christians. When we choose Jesus, we plug in to his power. He fills us with “living water” that pours forth to those around us. He also fills us with “light” that dispels the darkness around us.
That’s just what Jesus does for us when we accept him and plug in to Him as our power source. We are transformed from bland to beautiful! We become a source of light and living water to those around us. The world is pointed to Jesus as we live and work and go about our daily business.
“With joy you will drink deeply
from the fountain of salvation!” Isaiah 12:3 NLT
The goal of the Christian life is to point others to Jesus. What better way than to lead them to the real Power Source, the real Living Water, the real Light of the World! The “Light” prophesied in Isaiah that became a reality in Jesus Christ?
Isaiah prophesied: “The people who walk in darkness
will see a great light.
For those who live in a land of deep darkness,
a light will shine.” (Isaiah 9:2 NLT)
Jesus fulfilled: “The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light. And for those who lived in the land where death casts its shadow, a light has shined.” (Matthew 4:16 NLT)
I saw a great movie last night that dramatically portrayed the need for Christians to choose to stay plugged in to the Power Source in order to live abundant lives.
In the movie Grace Unplugged, the lead character who was a gifted Christian musician, chose to walk away from her Christian roots for the world of fame and fortune. Though she soon became very successful in the world’s eyes, she was miserable. It was only when she chose to return to the Lord and get plugged in again to His Power that she found true joy and happiness.
Are you “plugged in” to Jesus? Have you chosen him as your Power Source? Are you living the abundant life He wants for you? Or have you chosen to “unplug”? If you have never decided to accept Jesus or you have chosen to disconnect from him, I beg you to reconsider. Choose the Source of Living Water! Choose the Light! You won’t be sorry!
“We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves.” (2 Corinthians 4:7 NLT)
Thanks for reading and responding each week. I’d love to hear about your experiences with the Source, Jesus Christ!
